Art from the Heart: Ivor Gurney

Join Stroud-based multimedia artist Catherine Jones for a series of three Art from the Heart workshops based at the National Trustâs Tinkley Gate site. You can attend just one or come along to all three.
In this third session, we will look at some of the work of Gloucester-based poet Ivor Gurney, creating our own poems and a miniature book inspired by his poems. The photograph shows Gloucester Cathedralâs Ivor Gurney windows, created by Thomas Denny.

A celebration of the friendship between the brilliant and tragic war poet/composer Ivor Gurney and Marion Scott musician and trailblazer in the recognition of women in music.

Directed by Michael McCaffery, the story is brought to life through the rich material of Ivor Gurney and Marion Scottâs memories, poems and letters, interweaved with some of Gurneyâs most loved songs from the recordings of Ian Partridge, tenor and Jennifer Partridge, piano.

Song and Chamber Music Recital
Monday 11th March at 7 pm
Venue –Â Royal Grammar School, Upper Tything, Worcester, WR1 1HP
The Danteâs programme begins with Beethovenâs Op.135, his last completed work, which was premiered a year after the composerâs death. They devote the rest of the evening to British music, firstly Ian Venablesâ Invite to Eternity, settings of poems by the Northamptonshire-born poet John Clare (1793-1864) and Four Songs by Ivor Gurney, âBy a Biersideâ, âIn Flandersâ, âSevern Meadowsâ, âLights Outâ (Arr. Ian Venables) completes the first half, before the Dante conclude their recital with Elgarâs String Quartet, composed in 1918.
